Your e-car earns you money

What is already established in Germany under the term "THG Quote" can also be claimed in Austria since 01.01.2023: the eBonus. Owners of an e-vehicle have the opportunity to "convert" the CO2 savings that result from the use of electricity compared to fossil fuels into cash and thus earn up to several hundred euros per year.

Greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced

With the amendment of the Fuel Ordinance (KVO) in January of this year, suppliers of fossil fuels (e.g. mineral oil companies) in Austria are obliged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by a certain percentage each year. For the year 2023, the reduction target is 6%, gradually increasing to 13% by 2030. The aim of the regulation is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector, to promote renewable energies and to replace environmentally harmful drive types with clean alternatives in the long term.

Fossil fuel suppliers have several options to achieve this goal: On the one hand, fuels can be made "greener" by blending or selling lower CO2 fuels (e.g. biofuels). On the other hand, it is possible to purchase CO2 savings achieved by third parties and have them credited. E-car owners now also benefit directly from this.

What is an eQuota and an eBonus?

CO2 savings from charging at public and private charging points have already been certified and traded. However, this eQuota, e.g. when charging at home, "belonged" to the electricity supplier with whom the supply contract existed. With the amendment of the KVO, the eQuota now belongs to the owner of the registration.

The certification of the eQuotas – it is a prerequisite for resale – is carried out by the Federal Environment Agency, but only for applications of 100,000 kWh per year or more. In order for this threshold value to be reached, the legislator enables processing via service providers such as OnlineFuels, which pool the eQuotas, have them certified and then sell them to interested companies subject to quotas. As a registration owner, you can assign your eQuota to a service provider once a year and in return receive the proceeds from the sale, the eBonus.

This is how easy it is to get your eBonus

Simply register with the provider of your choice, upload a photo of the front and back of the registration certificate and enter your data. The owner entered on the registration certificate is automatically eligible for the bonus, even if it is a company. At the end of the year, you have the option of reporting the actual charging quantity. If it is not possible to record the exact amount of electricity charged, a flat-rate amount of electricity can be used. This amounts to 1,500 kWh per electric vehicle per year, regardless of the vehicle class.

How much is the eBonus?

First of all, it is important to distinguish between the theoretical maximum and the actual eQuota or eBonus. Many providers unfortunately do not make this distinction and give the impression that a significantly higher eBonus can be achieved than is actually achievable on the quota market. The amount of the eBonus depends on several factors, first of all on the charging quantity:

  • If you have accurate records of the charging quantities, you will receive a kilowatt-hour-accurate payment.
  • Alternatively, the legislator provides for a flat rate of 1,500 kWh per vehicle per year calculated on an aliquot basis.

In addition, the sales revenue of the eQuota plays a significant role. This depends above all on supply and demand. If, for example, the oil companies find other ways to achieve their GHG targets, this will have a corresponding effect on the achievable revenue.

And last but not least, the time of registration of your e-vehicle also plays a role. If the vehicle is registered or deregistered during the year, the eBonus will be paid out proportionately.

At present, there are still no empirical values as to what amounts can actually be achieved. However, OnlineFuels guarantees you the bonus shown on the website.
