Safely on the road in winter

The semester holidays are just around the corner. Many Austrians use this time to go on their annual skiing vacation with the family. The winter driving conditions in higher regions of the country are often underestimated, which can lead to dangerous situations. To ensure that you and your loved ones reach your destination safely and relaxed, we have compiled the most important safety tips for driving in winter.

Before you start driving

Tire check

It makes sense to check the tire pressure regularly, especially in winter. Before setting off on vacation, you should also check the tread depth (minimum tread depth 4 mm) and inspect the tires for damage.

Check lighting and fog lights

In the dark season, it is particularly important to have functioning lights. Check that all lights are working and replace them if necessary.

Ensure a clear view

Thoroughly clear your car of ice and snow before setting off. Allow at least five minutes for this. Attention: The "small viewing window" on the windshield is not enough and is even punishable by law. Don't forget to sweep the snow off the roof so as not to endanger other road users.

Carry winter equipment

Always carry the necessary winter equipment in your vehicle: Ice scraper, snow broom, de-icing spray for door locks and snow chains, especially when driving in alpine terrain. A flashlight and blankets are also important in the event of a breakdown.

While driving

Slow down

The anticipation of hitting the slopes is great and you want to get to your destination quickly. Nevertheless, pay attention to visibility and road conditions and adjust your speed accordingly.

Keep a safe distance, avoid risky driving maneuvers

Keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid overtaking on icy, snowy or slushy roads. Also avoid abrupt braking and steering maneuvers, as there is a risk of skidding, especially on wet and icy roads.

Always switch on ESP

If your car has ESP (Electronic Stability Program), always leave it switched on so that you do not skid in critical situations.

Take regular breaks

The classic driving tip is especially important in winter: plan regular breaks on longer journeys. Especially when visibility is poor, driving is more strenuous and can tire you out more quickly.
